With a little practice and familiarity with equipmentyou can get your bearings for ocean fishing in no time. Arguably the most important is understanding tides and moon phases, and how they affect your safety and ability to catch prime fish. According to Take Me Fishinglunar phases can affect when to fish saltwater areas in a few different ways. Second, during a full or new moon, the saltwater tides are stronger due to the pull of gravity. Stronger currents will mean more active baitfish and other prey making for optimal fishing tide times.

Incoming tide : This is generally the optimal time to fish since the current will be bringing baitfish, crustaceans and other prey in towards land.
Active tide : Opposite of slack tide, this means that baitfish and predators are active, giving you more opportunity to make a catch. Saltwater Fishing Tips: Boat Driving. Before we dig into the details, however, we can make one blanket statement: fish just about everywhere are almost always active at sunrise and sunset. These periods of changing light levels trigger feeding behavior in all kinds of predatory fish.
Explore All-Purpose Fishing Boats. The weather impacts saltwater fishing in many ways. Wind is a major factor since it can drive bait up onto a shoreline, create lots of ambient noise water-noise which helps you remain stealthyor make some areas churned up and muddy.
And as fronts pass through the changes in barometric pressure can also have an effect; with many species feeding increases immediately before a cold front, but slows during and after a storm or front hits. Fishing after a front pushes through is then sometimes poor, and continues to be poor for a day or two. Tides and currents have a huge impact on success in saltwater fisheries. They affect water level, and a shallow area that holds fish during a high tide might be a bare mud bank during low tide conditions.
Conversely, depressions in the bottom or a channel that remains deeper than the surrounding waters can have excellent fishing during a low tide. Read The Secrets of Tide Fishing to learn more about fishing according to the tides. The fish in any given spot may feed best at the end of an outgoing tide for days, weeks, or even months, and then change their pattern to feed best at the beginning of an incoming tide for one reason or another.
We already mentioned that daybreak and sunset are a great time to fish, and this is in no small part because of the changing light levels. Many anglers believe that the changing conditions makes it tougher for prey to spot and evade predators.
Heavy or intermittent cloud cover also has an effect, as does rainfall. Fish often feed strongly in low-light conditions, and light levels can also determine what color lures are most effective at any given time.
When the water condition and sunlight make the water look green, green color lures are often effective. But when they make the water look brown, root-beer colors are often a better pick. However, there still may be currents to deal with. So the major issues to consider as you choose the best time to go freshwater fishing include:.
The weather impacts freshwater fishing much as it does in saltwater environments. Wind can still push bait one way or another, waves still creates noise and can churn the water, and clouds still affect light levels. However, the effect of fronts and changes in barometric pressure are often much more pronounced. Rain or a lack thereof also has a bigger impact, since it can have a huge effect on water levels in lakes and ponds, and lots of runoff can roil streams and rivers.
When choosing a time to go fishing it can even eliminate some options, as rivers that would otherwise be great for fishing are turned into muddy torrents. This is true whether shore, wade or boat fishing. Rain also washes insects and bait into the water, with this extra food creating a feeding binge for freshwater fish. The position of the sun and cloud cover have similar effects in freshwater as they do in saltwater.Sketchup rendering software
There are so many variables coming into play that the decision can be a tough one. But we do have a simple answer that trumps all else: go fishing whenever your schedule allows. But the truth of the matter is that everyone has hectic schedules, a list of commitments, and limited time.
So fish whenever you can fish—and always remember that time-honored saying, the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work. Read Next: Where to Fish in Saltwater. Any time you can go fishing from a boat is the best time to go fishing from a boat!Tide Charts I check the tide charts every time I plan a trip. I always try to be in the water fishing during the greatest movement. Along with the weather report for the day, knowing the tides is the most important aspect to planning trips.
Tidal movement, caused by gravitational forces as the earth and moon rotate and orbit the sun, has a significant effect on planning fishing trips. Put simply, tidal forces move water, moving water means moving bait, and bait movement means active, feeding fish! Before we talk about what tides are and how to read and understand tide charts, let's try to bottom line this thing. So what kind of tides should you look for? Incoming, Outgoing, What's the Deal?
If you're fishing further back in the bay system, wade fishing or from your kayak or flats boat in shallow water, you'll want to be in the water during high tide and during the outgoing tide.
Then, when the tide starts to fall, game fish increase their pressure on the baitfish. That's when you'll see and hear more and more schools of baitfish breaking the surface. They know the water is dropping, and they're forced to head back toward deeper water and leave the flats. The incoming tide is important if you're fishing in an area where bait fish will be coming in. Examples of these areas are bay entrances close to major passes and other cuts from deeper water like the intracoastal waterway.
Low tide is generally the worst time to fish, as the fish will be hardest to find.848 numerology

Here are the major aspects to understanding Tide Charts and how to use them to your advantage and pursuit of saltwater fishing success.Database audit log
Tidal movement will be the strongest near the major passes. Further into the bay system the effects of tide will be much less. So one thing to remember here is that in the tide charts you'll find, most will be broken down into location. You might find the exact location you'll be fishing, but you might only find one that is relatively close. So you'll have to make adjustments based on your location. If you get a High Tide reading for a major pass and will be fishing an adjacent bay, you'll know that high tide will come later back in the bay because that "slow moving wave" will take time to travel back to where you'll be fishing.

How Tide and Current Influence Saltwater Fishing
This is a great place to start planning a fishing trip for me. I used to go to about 6 or 7 websites to plan a trip. Now, with this, everything is all together on one web page.
I have a question: When planning a fishing trip about a week in advance, I see that the Strike Score changes when I go back and check it near my fishing trip, even when I look at the strike score the night before vs. What factors would cause this? You guys at Salt Strong are the Best!

Are the ratings equivalent or not considering that tides do not readily affect the river? We encourage you to follow CDC recommendations and official orders in your state before heading to the water. To start, you will want to know what causes fishing tides and have an understanding of how saltwater tides impact fishing.
From there, you can learn how to read a tide chart that shows the water levels throughout a saltwater bay or estuary area at a specific time. Or, you can check tide tables that show daily high and low tide predictions for a specific spot that you want to fish. Fishing tides are the vertical movement of water caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. When this gravitational pull is at its highest point, we refer to water levels as being at high tide or the highest level of the tide.
Conversely, when the gravitational pull is at its lowest, we refer to water levels as being at low tide or the lowest level of the tide. Saltwater tides originate out in the open ocean, and then move toward the coastlines where they are easily measured.
Now that you know what causes tides, you may be wondering how to fish the tides and how tides impact fishing conditions. Tides and fishing conditions are related because tides cause the movement of water.
When there is an increase in current or water movement, fish are more likely to feed and are easier to catch. The water movement causes an associated increase in the activity of various marine organisms. These organisms include crustaceans and baitfish -- the primary food sources of saltwater game fish.
This type of chart indicates when the optimal tides for fishing will be based on the predicted tide schedule or periods of day and night when water movement will be at peak levels. In addition to reading a tidal chart or schedule, you can listen to a daily fishing tide report on television, on the radio, or online that will provide information on the best tide periods for catching fish.

For the saltwater fisherman, the tide must be understood so thoroughly that it practically beats in his or her chest as well. The earth rotates on its own axis, beneath these enormous waves, which accounts for the tidal occurrences at different points on the globe throughout the day.
Much like fingerprints among human beings, no two coastal areas exhibit the same details with regards to the tide, although basic patterns may be observed in locations that are far apart from one another.
Which pattern prevails in a given area depends on the configuration of the ocean basin in that region.
Some trends are consistent worldwide, such as the correlation between moon phase and tide height. Around the new and full moons each month, when the sun, the moon, and the earth are all in line with one another, the combined gravitational pull of the sun and moon on the oceans will cause more extreme high and low tides. Around the quarter moons, when the sun and moon form a right angle with the earth, the gravitational pull of the sun and moon will partially cancel each other out, resulting in more moderate tidal heights.
For example, the coastal topography may appear stagnant over lengthy stretches of coastline, but it is in a constant state flux on a smaller scale.Fishing the Tide Change
This creates localized differences in tidal action in places that may be only minutes away from one another. Remember, things may be similar in two nearby areas, but are never identical; there are just too many factors involved for this to be the case. For the purposes of this discussion, we will leave the generalities concerning the tide here and move on to more pertinent matters. There are hundreds of factors that influence the height and timing of the tides on earth; there are throngs of wonderful books out there—not to mention loads of information on the internet—so I encourage all serious fishermen to do their homework and learn as much as possible about how tides work.
For now, just know that tides do work, and we will jump right into how they affect saltwater fishing. The most basic fact to understand is the difference between tide and current. Simply put, the tide is the vertical component of the equation, while the current is the horizontal component.
Tides move up and down, and currents move laterally. This is why you may hear current referred to as tidal current : this specific current is the process by which the tide changes height.
The tidal current will fill an area with water to create high tide, and drain an area of water to create low tide. Although the height of the water may be critical to the fishing in a given scenario, it is the current that is of most interest to the fisherman. The real minutiae of tidal current—the finer points of timing, speed, and the like—are very difficult to learn.
This is because high and low tide do not necessarily coincide with incoming and outgoing currentthanks to the aforementioned nuances of coastal topography.
Only with time, patience, careful study, and meticulous recording can you expect to identify and understand the tidal details that make for successful fishing in your area. However, if you are able to master the elements of productive tidal conditions in one area, then you can probably do it in another. Current is important in saltwater fishing simply because lateral water movement enables predatory fish to move and feed efficiently.
There is an old adage in the world of fishing that states: fish travel with the current and feed against it. Put another way, fish will use the propulsive aid of the current to move about more easily; they will also allow the force of the current to deliver their prey right to their face—like the conveyor belt at a grocery store checkout delivers food to the bagging area.
Efficiency is the hallmark of accomplished predators, and dominant gamefish are no exception. Their savvy as hunters rivals that of any terrestrial predator. But hunting in the sea is very different from hunting on land. It is the physical contrast between the two mediums that produces the distinction here.
No predatory creature, be they of land or of water, can afford to spend more energy in capturing their prey than they obtain from its consumption.
